I am currently a Junior at OU. This is the beginning of my 3rd year here! I definitely like Norman more than Tulsa since it's closer to OKC. I just like OKC because there are more things to do there than in Tulsa. Going to college was a rough transition for me because I came from a pretty sheltered family, but I'm used to everything at this point! I am majoring in Biology, Pre-Med with a minor in Psychology. If all goes smoothly, I will graduate in the Spring of 2017! Next spring, I will be taking the MCAT so it will be a busy year as I will be making preparations to study for that test as well as applying to medical schools. Last semester, in order to make some new friends, I joined a small asian interest sorority called Phi Delta Alpha. Here are my beautiful sisters!

If you have read my "Favorite Places" post earlier, you will have already figured out that I was born in Vietnam! I came to the States when I was around fours years old and I have visited once or twice since then. I hope to visit Vietnam again soon to see how much the country has changed since has been around eight years since I last visited.
I enjoy reading, watching movies/TV shows, eating (I'm definitely someone who lives to eat, not the other way around), and singing! My passion for reading has dwindled a bit since the beginning of college because of the amount of work piled on me doesn't let me curl up with a good book, but I'm hoping on remedying that this year. If you have any good recommendations, let me know! I also love animals, especially when the animals are little baby animals. That's when they are the cutest!

Oh my gosh, here I just now found out that you go by Michelle: thank you for letting me know! I will change the blog directory for class right away. I can't do anything about how your name shows up in D2L, but everywhere else, you will be Michelle! :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd what great pictures of you and the animals. I am such a fan of animals too, as you probably guessed from all the cat memes on the class webpages, ha ha. We have two cats, both strays that we found in the woods by our house. They are both such wonderful cats: it's sad to think that they were abandoned by their owners, just dumped in the woods like that... but now they have homes, and we are so happy to have them! They were both super-skinny when they came to us, but now we have to be careful that they don't get too fat. They are young, though, and like to play, so they get a lot of cat exercise, ha ha.
Anyway, THANK YOU for getting started with the class early like this, and I hope you will find lots of good things to read. That's one of the things I love about this job: it is an excuse for me to get to read lots of great stories, both in the old books but also the new stories you all will be writing (like the beautiful story you wrote earlier this week, for example!).
Oh, and if you have any events with Phi Delta Alpha that I can include in the class announcements, let me know. There's stuff happening on campus every day, but the most fun events to announce are the ones that are connected with people in the class!
Happy Weekend!!!
Hi Michelle! It's awesome to meet you! I think it's really funny that not even you know where your "nickname" of Michelle came from, but i like it!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that OKC has a lot more to do than Tulsa, but even then it doesn't have a whole lot to do. I grew up a military brat, and Oklahoma is definitely not my favorite place to live. However, at least OKC is near to Dallas, which has tons of stuff to do!
I'm also someone who lives to eat!!! I love eating and trying new foods, especially from little, hole-in-the-wall restaurants. There's a creperie in Midwest City that is to die for. Basil is another place in Midwest City that i love to eat. If you have any reccommedations of places to eat in Norman, I would love to hear them!
My passion for reading has been a bit impaired as well, thanks to the heavy college schedule. I managed to read some books this summer, but that's about it. Especially when I have to read so much for my classes. Kind of makes reading for pleasure not so pleasurable anymore!
I hope you have a fantastic semester and good luck on your MCAT!!!
Hi Michelle! Your introduction was great and it was very nice to read about you. As you can see I am a procrastinator, hence, I am just starting to comment whereas both of you have already commented on mine. Anyway, it is very nice to meet you (even though we haven't met :)).
ReplyDeleteAs you already know, I am currently a Junior. It's really cool that you're in pre-med as I was in pre-med at the start of college.
OKC is nice and it does have some good places, but when you are bored and want to do something fun, OKC unfortunately does not offer anything close yet! But since the Thunder came over, we are improving!!
I loved to read when I was little, but I don't anymore as my workloads have started to increase. So we are all on the same boat. I had a Native American class this past summer and was required to read "The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie. It was a great book!! I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet. It provides great information with lots of humor.
I think that is all. I too wish you luck on your MCAT!!
Hello Michelle. I feel your struggle as a pre-med myself. I can tell you from experience that the MCAT is just a bump in the road and it is definitely something you can overcome. Luckily you will be taking it next year and will have plenty of old MCAT exams that you can take and you will have an idea of the score that is wanted. I do not have any of that this year so I feel like I'm just in a big pot luck in which I'm raising my hand and saying, "pick me!"
ReplyDeleteI am also a biology major here, but I am minoring in chemistry and Spanish. Have you thought about minoring in chemistry as well? It only requires 4 more hours after you finish your pre-reqs for medical school. You can take a 3 hour course of your choosing and OU offers a 1 hour chemistry of beer making class. I don't know if that interests you, but I like to tell all of my fellow biology peeps about it.
Hi, Michelle!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you go to high school? I lived in Inola, but I went to school at Bishop Kelley in Tulsa! I haven't done much exploring around OKC, but I am definitely going to have to check out all the stuff there is to do! I have never been a huge fan of Tulsa, my family is from Denver so it falls pretty flat in comparison, but it has definitely grown on me.
The phrase "living to eat" describes me, as well! I spend the majority of my free time thinking about the things I'm going to eat for my next meal, and I can eat more tacos than any other human being I know.
I am also an only child! Growing up in Inola was super lonely, because we live way outside of town. But, we've always had animals. We got my first dog when I was 10, and I've had at least two ever since! My dog Tucker is without a doubt my best bud.
It was so nice getting to know you, and I hope studying for the MCAT goes really well!
Hi Michelle, It's interesting to read about someone from a foreign country that moved here but still keeps in touch with their foreign country a little. I have really explored many countries at all but would like to. It is also interesting that you go by a completely random name that was not given to you at birth and have no connection. You are right OKC has plenty to do especially around the Bricktown area. Good luck with your future plan!
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your introduction post! I bet we have taken some simliar classes because I am on the Pre-PA track right now. I bet it is kind of nerve wracking to think about taking the MCAT next semester, especially since they changed it to a new form recently- good luck! It sounds like you know what you want to do and what makes you passionate though, which is awesome! I hope that you get to go and visit Vietnam soon again, I can't imagine being so far away from the place I was born in. Do you still have a lot of family over there? I am a book nerd as well, but college does have a way of taking away recreational reading time. I'm usually stuck reading textbooks. I like to catch up on fun reading over breaks though. Good luck this semester!
Hey Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI totally get the whole name thing, my mom has two names one being her I guess you could say "asian" name and the other one is what everyone calls her but they are not close at all and I have no idea where she got it haha. It is so cool that you are trying to go to med school, and I hope you do well on the MCAT!
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I wanted to apologize. I believe I have addressed you as Phoi on previous post or two. I am sorry D: I should have read your introduction!! My passion for reading has dwindled due to college, too. It makes me quite sad, but I am hoping it will get better since I am currently finishing my last year.
I am an only child too! It does get quite lonely at time, but us only children sure find creative ways to entertain ourselves. Perhaps that is where the passion for books comes from.
I look forward to reading more of your posts and I wish you the best of luck with classes this semester!
I like your story about your name. I had wondered since I've seen a Phoi Nguyen and a Michelle Nguyen, and well I feel stupid because, it was thee same person! Anyways, I feel you with the name thing. Sometimes there are things that can't be explained.
ReplyDeleteThat picture of you with that cat is adorable! As a self proclaimed Cat Lady and Vegan, I love animals, so I appreciate your visit to the second chance pet place!
I haven't heard anyone say "I live to eat, not the other way around" and that is SO accurate for me too!
Oh, and I am also an only child. More pros than cons I would say.
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a crazy busy schedule! Hopefully this semester gives you a chance to relax somewhat. More than that, hopefully you get a chance to read some more. Its also really cool that you are so into animals. I agree with you that animals are incredibly adorable when they are little. It’s too bad they don’t stay little forever.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, nice to meet you! I hope studying for the MCAT is going well at this point. Good luck! I think that’s great that you joined a group to make some new friends. It definitely makes it easier to meet people. That picture is very cute of you and your sisters. How cool that you moved here when you were 4! I hope you get to go back to Vietnam as well! Good luck this semester!
It’s nice to meet you Phoi. I can definitely see what you have to go through school wise since I’m Vietnamese too; I’m just not doing pre-med. I hope everything goes according to plan and you end up doing something you really enjoy. I read some of your stories and I can see that you are a really good writer, so that may be something you can do on the side also. It is nice to meet you and hopefully I can read more of your stories.
ReplyDeleteHello Michelle! Your parents are very interesting. Naming you Phoi but calling you Michelle is quite intriguing. I really do wonder why they did not just name you Michelle. Good luck on your future tests and with your major! It is going to be rough but you got it! Your sorority sisters look like they’re very close. They must seem like family to you. Just like you, I also live to eat haha. There is just so much good food out in the world to enjoy. I hope this semester goes well for you!
ReplyDeleteHey Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI think its interesting that you do not know where the name came from. I agree with you that OKC is better than Tulsa, since there are more things to do. I have traveled a lot, but I have never been to Vietnam. That would be a cool place to visit I think. I hope you get to go back soon! Good luck on your MCAT!
Hi Michelle! First off, I loved the picture of your dog! I am such a sucker for dogs of all kinds, and yours is adorable. Also, good luck on the MCAT. I'm supposed to be taking the GRE this semester and I'm freaking out about it, so I imagine you're pretty nervous about your test too. Also, I love eating too. Food is life, man.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, the most beautiful name a girl can have!! I don't find many other Michelles...I'm from the Tulsa area....I know the struggle of having nothing to do, I like it here better as well. GOOD LUCK on the MCAT, I wish you nothing but the best there. We have the same interests as well. I wish I could read more but by the time I finally finish homework, I just want to watch Netflix and not think or read anymore. Netflix has been my saving grace lately.
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle. Vietnam seems like a beautiful country and I would love to go there one day. You a very lucky to be able to visit!
ReplyDeleteI am also a biology major and this class is a great way to get some lighter reading in. You seem like you are staying very busy with school, volunteering, and your soroity but all the hard work will pay off soon. Keep it up!
Hi Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI love your name, I named my oldest daughter her middle name is Michelle, it is also my middle sister's middle name. Your other name Phoi is beautiful too. What a beautiful place Vietnam is. I have a friend that lives there and I am always amazed at how beautiful it is there. I love living close to OKC too. This is a neat place to be, OU is really neat too. Have a great semester and great junior year!
Hi Michelle!
ReplyDeleteMy minor is also psychology! I find it so interesting, but I just did not want to major in it. That is so cool that you are taking the MCAT. Study up! But lets be honest, I bet you will do great! Confidence is key! I also used to enjoy reading, but since coming to college, I have not found much time to actually enjoy it. Since I am graduating in December, I am hoping my life will slow down a bit and I will be able to sit down with a book like I used to!
Good luck in everything!
